The economics of HDPE long service life

2020-09-12

Now that the durability of HDPE has been determined, with these characteristics, when HDPE pipes are used in water conservancy infrastructure applications, economy is very important. Compared with ductile iron pipes, HDPE pipes have the most obvious advantage of preventing leakage. There are two types of pipeline leakage: joint leakage (mainly through pipe joints and perforations) and burst perforation leakage (caused by longitudinal cracks and circumferential rupture). This problem is also very convenient to deal with.

The size of HDPE pipes is between Φ1600 mm and 3260 mm, and can be used for pipes with large structures on the market. In addition to municipal water supply systems, large-diameter plastic pipes made of HDPE can also be used in seawater desalination and wastewater treatment facilities. Large diameter pipes can range from 315-1200CM. Large-diameter HDPE pipes are very durable and reliable. They can run for decades when buried underground and require little maintenance. They are very suitable for wastewater treatment applications. The durability of HDPE pipe increases as its size increases. This type of pipe exhibits incredible shock resistance. In a case study of the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan, in the city’s infrastructure; all other pipelines failed at least once every 3 kilometers, and HDPE pipelines had zero failures in the entire system.
